How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The abortion pill also called medication abortion, medical abortion, chemical abortion, or Plan C typically involves two different drugs. Step 1: Mifepristone The first drug blocks progesterone, a hormone the pregnancy needs to continue. Without the effects of progesterone, the embryo stops growing and dies. Step 2: Misoprostol The second drug is usually taken 24 to 48 hours later. It causes the uterus to contract and bleed in order to expel the embryo from the body. An embryo is a human being in an early stage of development.
How Late Can You Take the Abortion Pill?
The FDA-approved mifepristone regimen is for an intrauterine pregnancy through 10 weeks or 70 days from the first day of your last menstrual period. Taking abortion drugs later may increase the possibility of complications or the need for an additional medical or surgical procedure. Knowing exactly how far along you are matters. A positive pregnancy test cannot tell you the pregnancy’s gestational age, location, or viability. Oxford Women’s Care Center can provide no-cost pregnancy testing and help connect you with an ultrasound referral.
Can You Buy the Abortion Pill Over the Counter?
No. Mifepristone is not an over-the-counter medication. It requires a prescription from a certified healthcare provider and must be dispensed by a certified provider or pharmacy through the FDA’s Mifepristone REMS Program.
Can You Order the Abortion Pill Online?
Mifepristone may be provided by a certified mail-order pharmacy with a prescription from a certified provider. However, the FDA does not recommend buying it online from sources outside its REMS safety program.
Medication from an unknown or unverified website may not be FDA-approved and could be counterfeit, expired, contaminated, or contain the wrong amount of medication.
What Are the Side Effects?
The abortion pill causes cramping and vaginal bleeding. Other possible side effects include:
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Diarrhea
-
Headache
-
Weakness or dizziness
-
Fever or chills
-
Abdominal pain or cramping
-
Spotting or bleeding that may continue for several days
Serious complications can include very heavy bleeding, an incomplete abortion, or a serious infection. These may require emergency medical care or a surgical procedure.
Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe abdominal pain, prolonged heavy bleeding, a sustained fever, fainting, or feel seriously ill.
When May the Abortion Pill Not Be Suitable?
The abortion pill may not be appropriate if:
-
Your pregnancy is more than 10 weeks or 70 days from your last menstrual period
-
You have a confirmed or suspected ectopic pregnancy
-
You currently have an IUD in place
-
You have certain bleeding disorders or take blood-thinning medication
-
You have chronic adrenal failure
-
You take certain long-term steroid medications
-
You have an allergy to mifepristone, misoprostol, or similar medications
-
You have certain other medical conditions
-
You cannot access emergency medical care if complications occur
Mifepristone will not treat an ectopic pregnancy. Because an ectopic pregnancy can become life-threatening, it is important to seek medical care if one is suspected.
Facts Without Pressure or Judgment
Before taking the abortion pill, it is important to confirm:
-
That you are actually pregnant
-
How far along the pregnancy is
-
Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
-
Whether the pregnancy appears viable
-
Whether you have any health conditions that could increase your risks
